You have five more days (and counting) to register in New York. www.cupolitics.org/vote 3. Lessons of Lebanon: Lunch with David Makovsky Barnard's Altschul Atrium In the wake of Israel's inconclusive summer war with Hizballah, many unanswered questions remain about the conduct and implications of the conflict. For example, were Israel's military achievements worth the apparent costs, including a weakened overall deterrence posture and the shelving of further unilateral withdrawal from the West Bank? And how will the changes wrought to the regional status quo affect Iran and Hizballah's previously favorable standing in Lebanon? On October 17, expert David Makovsky will tackle these and other questions head on when he returns to his alma mater to address us over lunch. David Makovsky is a senior fellow and director of The Washington Institute's Project on the Middle East Peace Process. He is also an adjunct lecturer in Middle Eastern Studies at Johns Hopkins University's Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS). Before joining The Washington Institute, Mr. Makovsky was an award-winning journalist who covered the peace process from 1989 to 2000. He is the former executive editor of the Jerusalem Post and was diplomatic correspondent for Israel's leading daily Haaretz. Now a contributing editor to U.S. News and World Report, he served for eleven years as the magazine's special Jerusalem correspondent. He was awarded the National Press Club's 1994 Edwin M. Hood Award for Diplomatic Correspondence for a cover story on PLO finances that he co-wrote for the magazine. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4. Citizenship and Military Service, featuring Kathy Roth-Douquet and Frank Schaeffer, authors of AWOL: the Unexcused Absence of America's Upper Classes from Military Serviceand How It Hurts Our Country Wednesday, October 11 In contrast to previous generations, American elites now have little personal connection to the military forces that bear the burdens of national defense. This gap creates misunderstandings and raises significant questions about political responsibility, social equity, and institutional leadership. Should something be done to close the gap? What consequences follow, whether or not the gap is addressed? The authors, a Democrat and a Republican, explore the issue and offer proposals for resolving it. Comments by Prof. Richard Betts, Director, Salzman Institute ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5. Media Training with Jennifer Palmieri, Vice President of the Center for American Progress co-sponsored with the College Democrats *note: this is a multipartisan event, open to all who would like to attend Jennifer Palmieri, Vice President of Communications, Center for American Progress, will conduct a media boot camp training, addressing the importance of spreading the progressive message on college campuses.
