1. The CPU Presents: The Media That Matters Film Festival
Date: Monday, 10/10
Time: 7:30PM
Location: Roone Arledge Cinema, Alfred Lerner Hall
Description: The Media That Matters Film Festival (MTM) features
nine short films that seek to engage young people in the political
process by addressing issues - among others - of sustainability,
social justice, and identity. Now in its fifth season, MTM is in
the midst of a year-long national tour.
The nine featured films of MTM were culled from over 450 entries
from producers from all around the world. The event will feature a
screening of the chosen films, to be followed by a Q&A session
with a number of directors and producers. Pizza and refreshments
will be served following the screening.
For more information about MTM and a description of its featured
shorts, please visit: http://www.mediathatmattersfest.org/mtm05/.
MTM is sponsored each year by Media Rights, a non-profit
organization that connects filmmakers, activists, educators and
youth through a variety of online and offline projects. The CPU
thanks MTM and Campus Progress for their help in hosting this
event.

2. CPU Co-sponsored Event: "Race, Policy and Katrina: The Making of
a Disaster"
Date: Friday, 10/14
Time: 9:00AM - 3:30PM
Location: International Affairs Building, 15th Floor
Description: This-half day conference will explore the complex ways
in which race, economics, and environmental policy shaped the
Katrina disaster. The conference is an interdisciplinary
collaboration among students from across Columbia University.
The conference calls on all students to understand the issues and
take action. It will feature three interactive workshops
and plenary sessions, wherein participants may critically engage the
issues that Hurricane Katrina brought so strongly to the forefront
of the national consciousness: the failure of emergency response
efforts, the media's influence on our understanding of the
disaster, and Katrina's implications for movements on behalf of
socio-economic justice and environmental rights. The three
sessions will consider these questions in the context of both
domestic and international policy.
By their end, these sessions aim to produce progressive policy
recommendation or action items, in which students may become
directly involved.
Please find below the conference schedule:
9:30AM - 11AM: Emergency Response Policy & Discrimination
11AM - 12:30PM: Hurricane Katrina and Economic and Enviroinmental
Justice Movements
2PM - 3:30PM: Media Bias and the Implications of Race
