SEATS WILL FILL QUICKLY! Description: RAYMOND W. KELLY was appointed Police Commissioner of the City of New York by Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, making Commissioner Kelly the first person to hold the post for a second, separate tenure. Commissioner Kelly was formerly Senior Managing Director, Global Corporate Security, at Bear, Stearns & Co. Inc. Before that, he served as Commissioner of the U.S. Customs Service, where he managed the agency's 20,000 employees and $20 billion in annual revenue. For his accomplishments at Customs, Commissioner Kelly was awarded the Alexander Hamilton Medal for Exceptional Service. From 1996-98, Commissioner Kelly was Under Secretary for Enforcement at the U.S. Treasury Department. There he supervised the Department's enforcement bureaus, including the U.S. Customs Service, the U.S. Secret Service and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center, the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network, and the Office of Foreign Assets Control. In addition, Mr. Kelly served on the Executive Committee and was elected Vice President for the Americas of Interpol, the international police organization, from 1996-2000. He served previously as Director of the International Police Monitors in Haiti, a U.S. led force responsible for ending human rights abuses and establishing an interim police force there. For this service, Commissioner Kelly was awarded the Exceptionally Meritorious Service Commendation by the President of the United States and the Commander's Medal for Public Service by the Chairman of the Joint Chief's of Staff. Commissioner Kelly spent 31 years in the New York City Police Department, serving in 25 different commands and as Police Commissioner from 1992-1994. A combat veteran of the Vietnam War, Commissioner Kelly retired as a Colonel from the Marine Corps Reserves after 30 years of service. He holds a BBA from Manhattan College, a JD from St. John's University School of Law, an LLM from New York University Graduate School of Law and an MPA from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. He has received honorary degrees from Marist College, Manhattan College, the College of St. Rose, St. John's University and the State University of New York. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2. 3. Annual Student Lobby Trip to Congress (New Date: Wednesday, 04/05) Let lawmakers know you care about student aid! You are invited to take part in "DC Lobby Day 2006," a joint Columbia/Barnard-Cornell University student aid advocacy trip. On Wednesday, April 5, a delegation of students will visit the offices of U.S. Senators and Representatives to talk about the importance of federal student aid. The day includes a special briefing on higher education issues by CU alumni working in Congress. Get a first hand look at the legislative process while helping build support for programs important to college students! Our group will leave Columbia at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 4 to travel by bus to Washington. We return at the end of the next day. There is no cost to students; transportation, meals and lodging are provided. Space is limited, so please RSVP as soon as possible. Prof. CAROLYN EISENBERG, Hofstra University (of Brooklyn Parents for Peace) will examine a number of those proposals. Then Rep. JOSE SERRANO (D, WFP- Bronx) will discuss his support for another plan, introduced by Rep. McGovern (D, Worcester, MA). Rep. McGovern proposes to cut off all funding for the Iraq war, except for that supporting the peaceful transition of Iraq to international peacekeeping forces, and the safe withdrawal of American troops. Come hear Columbia student-veterans discuss their first-hand experiences with combat, nation-building and other rigours of present-day war. This is your chance to ask questions of classmates who have participated in these conflicts at the ground level. Please join us for a candid and intimate view of war. Candlelight Vigil Date: TONIGHT, 03/20 Description: On the third anniversary of the US invasion of Iraq, join your fellow classmates on Low Steps this Monday, March 20th, 9:30 pm, for a moment of silence in honor of our fallen U.S. service members. Students should arrive at the steps at 9:15 pm and, following a very brief speech, will begin a moment of silence to honor those we've lost. We ask that all students be respectful.
