Progressive Majority Internship - Seattle, WA
Racial Justice Intern, Progressive Majority Washington
Reports To:
Edie Gilliss, State Political Director
Background:
In 2004, Progressive Majority established the Racial Justice Campaign Fund to support and elect progressive people of color at the local, state and federal levels.This program is based on the simple idea that to achieve a progressive majority, we must aim for political equality, and ensure that progressive candidates of color have access to the training, financial support and political strength needed to win elections. To do this, we:
- Identify and support candidates of color who will champion a broad progressive agenda;
- Recruit and train them to run strong, successful campaigns; and
- Back them up with real political muscle by connecting them to a broad base of political donors and experts.
People of color - African Americans, Latinos, Native Americans, Asians and Pacific Islanders - constitute nearly 32 percent of the U.S. population. Yet representation for people of color is noticeably lacking in virtually all ranks of leadership in the U.S.A. This doesn't look like equality. Our government simply doesn't reflect the diversity of our country - or the values of a free and just society.
Scope:
The Racial Justice Campaign Fund Intern will work with the Political Director to implement the overall Progressive Majority mission of recruiting, supporting, training, and electing progressive candidates at the state and local level, focusing on minority candidates.
Duties:
- Conduct in-depth, ongoing statewide research on the Washington political landscape using all available geographic, demographic, and political data;
- Assist state director in outreach to communities of color;
- Develop a database of elected officials in targeted districts as recruitment prospects;
- Develop a database of entrepreneurial nonprofit leaders in each state as recruitment prospects;
- Work with state director to identify emerging trends and political and legislative opportunities to recruit and elect progressive candidates to local and state legislative office;
- Conduct preliminary interviews with potential candidates for candidate recruitment program;
- Provide technical assistance to Farm Team candidates on all aspects of campaigning;
- Assist Political Director with planning and execution of small and large group training sessions for Farm Team members; and
- Maintain comprehensive database of potential candidates.
