September 7, 2004
Dear Columbia Political Union,
With the start of the fall semester comes the beginning of another
year of great events and publications. We are very excited about
all of the opportunities we will have to facilitate political
discussion and awareness on campus and we hope you are as well.
There are many ways for you to get involved whether it be
attending events and reading the various publications or actually
working to put these together. So read below for descriptions of
some of the open positions.
And as always, if you have any questions or suggestions, we would
love to hear from you just email cpu@columbia.edu.
best wishes,

CPU EVENTS/ANNOUNCEMENTS:
1. A position has just opened on the Executive Board for a new
Webmaster. The Webmaster is responsible for the content and
maintenance of the CPU’s and the CPR’s websites and mailing lists.
In addition, the Webmaster is a voting member of the CPU’s Executive
Board, requiring attendance at weekly Executive Board Meetings and
events.
Anyone interested in the position should email Alexia Koritz at
adk2003@columbia.edu for a more detailed description of the
responsibilities.

2. Joseph Rome, the Events Coordinator, is looking for both
Deputies and Events Committee Members.
Deputies are appointed positions of responsibility. Deputies must
attend all events and events meetings. In addition, Deputies
must also take on the actual work of putting together an event,
such as inviting speakers, constructing panels, setting up the room
on the day of the event, and interacting with the speakers they have
helped to bring to campus.
Events Committee Members have much greater flexibility in terms of
how much work they do. Anyone who wants to can join the Events
Committee, and they can do so at any time.
Anyone interested in applying for a Deputy position should email Joe
Rome at jbr2109@columbia.edu by this Friday (September 10th) in
order to schedule an interview. Anyone interested in becoming an
Events Committee Member should also email Joe, although an
interview won’t be necessary.

3. Benjamin Levitan, the Editor-in-Chief of the Columbia Political
Review, is looking for an Art Editor and a Deputy Business Manager.
The Art Editor will illustrate the articles in the CPR and draw the
cover. There is traditionally only one Art Editor, but he/she can
take on additional illustrators to help with the drawings.
The Deputy Business Managers will help the Business Manager to
increase funding for the publication and make CPR more prominent on
campus. Specifically, there is a lot of interaction with
(potential) advertisers in an attempt to use ad revenue to fund
improvements to the magazine. Deputies will also help facilitate
publicity campaigns before the distribution of each issue so that
people read it once they get it.
Anyone interested in applying for either of these positions should
email Benjamin Levitan at bml2012@columbia.edu.

4. Katharine Harlow and David Kim, the Treasurers, are looking for
Deputies. Deputy Treasurers will assist David and Katharine with
the financial aspects of the CPU, including event preparation,
budgeting, soliciting new donors, and working with the Board of
Advisors. They will help vet and recruit new Board members, draft
invitations and letters, and organize Board meetings. In addition,
they will be working throughout the year to organize a fundraising
dinner with a prominent keynote speaker to raise money for the CPU.
Anyone interested in applying for a Deputy position should email
David Kim at djk2103@columbia.edu to obtain the short application.
*******************************************************************
5. Colin Probert, the Communications Coordinator, is looking for a
Deputy. The Deputy Communications Coordinator will assist with
interacting with the press, coordinating advertising, and
representing the CPU both on and off campus. This position is
crucial to bolstering event attendance and maintaining the CPU’s
reputation, both of which are necessary in attracting speakers of
local and national significance.
Anyone interested in applying for a Deputy position should email
Colin Probert at ctp2005@columbia.edu.
*******************************************************************
6. Mariya Konovalova, the Publisher, is looking for Deputies. The
Deputy Publisher will assist the Publisher in compiling and
distributing the non-partisan election guide in addition to the
issue updates that the CPU regularly puts out. This will involve
research, cooperation with campus organizations, working with
outside sources, writing, formatting and editing, working with
printing companies, and coordinating the distribution on and off
campus.
Anyone interested in applying for a Deputy position should email
Mariya Konovalova at mak2033@columbia.edu.
