CPU EVENTS/ANNOUNCEMENTS:
1. The Columbia Political Union Presents:
Ellen Malcolm, President and Founder of Emily’s List
TONIGHT, Monday, April 11th at 5:00 pm
Satow Room, Alfred Lerner Hall
In 1985 Ellen Malcolm founded Emily’s List (www.emilyslist.org), a
non-profit organization dedicated to helping pro-choice Democratic
female candidates win political elections on the federal, state,
and local levels. "EMILY" is an acronym for Early Money Is Like
Yeast (it makes dough rise). The List has contributed to the
successful campaigns of at least 11 senators, 55 congresswomen and
7 governors. There are currently some 85,000 members of Emily's
List, which claims to have contributed $9.7 million to pro-choice
candidates in 2002. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi gives credit
to the List for her successful candidacy in California. EMILY's List
has also become the largest financial resource for minority women
seeking federal office.

• Chuck Pennacchio, candidate for Senate from Pennsylvania
• Ellen Malcolm, Co-Founder and President of EMILY's List
Plus, the very special Editor's Interview:
• Jason West, Mayor of the Village of New Paltz, NY. After becoming
New York's first Green Party mayor, he made international news last
year when he began marrying gay couples. West is currently
fighting charges of knowingly marrying couples who didn't have

Also, we're featuring updates about articles that appeared in issues
from last semester.

working on a phone campaign to oppose the proposed cuts to
financial aid. We want to have 1000 phone calls made to Senators
and Congresspeople over the course of ten hours. It's
going to be a HUGE production. To help out, email CCSC President
Matthew Harrison at mph2003@columbia.edu.
