1. Columbia Political Union Executive Board Elections
Do you want to get more involved in the CPU? Would you like to hold
an Executive Board Position?
On April 18th, the CPU Governing Board will elect a new Executive
Board and we’d like you to run! If you are planning to run, or
would just like to know more about the positions and the election
process, contact current General Manager Alexia Koritz at
adk2003@columbia.edu. You may run for any of the seven Executive
Board positions:

2. A coalition of students and organizations (the CPU included) is
working on a phone campaign to oppose the proposed cuts to
financial aid. We want to have 1000 phone calls made to Senators
and Congresspeople over the course of ten hours. It's
going to be a HUGE production. To help out, email CCSC President

3. Tammy Bruce, eminent conservative feminist
Tuesday, April 5th at 8:00 PM
Room 104, Jerome Greene Hall
Ms. Bruce is, in her own words, "an openly gay, pro-choice,
gun owning, pro-death penalty, voted-for-President Reagan
progressive feminist." She served as chapter head of NOW, and
currently hosts a radio talk show out of LA. Ms. Bruce will speak
about the relationship between minority groups and conservatism.
This event is cosponsored by the Columbia College Republicans, the
Young America's Foundation, the Barnard Center for Research on
Women, and the Columbia Political Union.

4. The Columbia Political Union Presents:
Ellen Malcolm, Founder of Emily’s List
Monday, April 11th at 5:00 pm

In 1985 Ellen Malcolm founded Emily’s List (www.emilyslist.org), a
non-profit organization dedicated to helping pro-choice Democratic
female candidates win political elections on the federal, state,
and local levels. "EMILY" is an acronym for Early Money Is Like
Yeast (it makes dough rise.) The List has contributed to the
successful campaigns of at least 11 senators, 55 congresswomen and
7 governors. There are currently some 85,000 members of Emily's
List, which claims to have contributed $9.7 million to pro-choice
candidates in 2002. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi gives credit
to the List for her successful candidacy in California. EMILY's List
has also become the largest financial resource for minority women
seeking federal office.

5. The Defense of the West: How to Begin with Roger Scruton,
philosopher and author
Thursday, April 14th from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm

Pre-eminent British philosopher Roger Scruton has written numerous
books, including “A Dictionary of Political Thought” and “The West
and the Rest: Globalization and the Terrorist Threat,” which puts
9/11 in context by exploring what is distinctive about the Western
political system as well as the problems it faces today.

6. The Columbia Political Union Presents:
Patrick Guerriero, Executive Director of the Log Cabin Republicans
Tuesday, April 19th at 7:00 pm

Patrick Guerriero has devoted his career to public service. This
former mayor, state representative, and candidate for lieutenant
governor in Massachusetts joined Log Cabin Republicans as Executive
Director in January 2003. Since taking over Log Cabin, Guerriero
has dramatically increased membership, doubled the budget, and
developed new chapters across America. Log Cabin was the leading
conservative voice that helped defeat the anti-family Federal
Marriage Amendment in the U.S. House and Senate in 2004.
Guerriero has championed issues including lower taxes, smaller
government, improved public schools, safer neighborhoods, and equal
rights. In addition, he has advocated for anti-hate-crimes
legislation, HIV/AIDS funding, and proposals to give recognition
and protection to gay and lesbian families. At Log Cabin, Guerriero
has built coalitions with other gay and lesbian
organizationsworking with people across the ideological spectrum
to develop a bipartisan strategy for achieving equality.
Guerriero is a dedicated Republican activist and political adviser
to several Massachusetts governors, including Governors William
Weld, Paul Cellucci, and Jane Swift.

7. The Columbia Political Union Presents:
David Frum, Author and Fellow at the American Enterprise Institute
Late April
David Frum is the author of the national bestseller, THE
RIGHT MAN: The Surprise Presidency of George W. Bush, and co-author
with Richard Perle of AN END TO EVIL: How to Win the War on Terror.
Mr. Frum is a fellow at the American Enterprise Institute and writes
a daily column for National Review Online. In 2001, Judge Richard
Posner's study of public intellectuals listed Mr. Frum as one of
the 100 most influential minds in the United States. From January
2001 to February 2002, David Frum was special assistant to
President Bush for economic speechwriting.
Mr. Frum received a simultaneous BA and MA in history from Yale in
1982. He was appointed a visiting lecturer in history at Yale in
1986; in 1987, he graduated cum laude from Harvard Law School,
where he served as president of the Federalist Society.

9. The Columbia Club Presents: Turning Point A Political Agenda,
featuring Daedre Levine, Political Strategist (4/5)

This is a free event and non-members are welcome to attend. But

Dr. Anne-Renee Testa, host of Turning Point, will discuss with
Daedre Levine her journey to becoming a political strategist. Dae
will talk about the major influences that guided her, including her
family, work experiences and her time at Columbia University. She
will also discuss the way in which becoming a mother, her most
important job, has strengthened her interest in the issues that
first led her to politics.
Daedre has been active on a number of progressive issues, including
reproductive rights, work and family issues, and voter advocacy.
During her tenure as Partner at Levine/McEvoy Fundraising
Consultants, Dae helped elect over 40 Democratic candidates for
federal and statewide office, and helped support the work of
countless national organizations. Recognizing the need for action
at the local level, Dae co-founded WOMEN PAC, an organization
dedicated to help elect candidates with innovative solutions to
issues facing women and families in New York City.
Daedre has appeared as a political analyst on Oxygen Media, FOX
News, NBC News, NY1, and the Women’s Radio Network. She graduated
from Barnard College and received a Master of Public Administration
from Columbia’s School of International and Public Affairs. She is
currently an adjunct faculty member at SIPA’s Executive MPA
program, teaching Public Sector Marketing, Strategy &
Communications, and recently started a new position as Director of
Media Relations at Planned Parenthood Federation of America.
Dr. Anne-Renee Testa is a practicing psychologist who has appeared
on hundreds of TV and radio shows. She is a frequent guest on
MSNBC, NBC’s The Today Show, and Court TV. She has produced and
hosted more than 400 in-studio talk shows called TURNING POINT.

10. Columbia College Alumni Internship Fund
This funding will be available for students (rising Columbia College
juniors or seniors) who have secured unpaid internships for Summer
2005. Award amounts will range from $1,000 to $3,000. The fund has
been made possible thanks to the generosity of Columbia College
alumni/ae who desire to foster students participation in
internships. All applications MUST be submitted to Susan Chang-Kim
at the Center for Career Education by 4:00 p.m. on Friday, April
22, 2005. Recipients of the awards will be
announced by April 29, 2005.
